More than color picking

Why the right color
changes everything.

Choosing a paint color seems simple until you’re standing in an aisle staring at 3,000 swatches that all look vaguely the same. Then you bring samples home and they look completely different on your wall than they did in the store. Then the color you loved in the morning looks wrong by afternoon. This is normal — and it’s exactly why color consultation exists.

At Oren Painting, architectural color design is a core part of what we do — not an upsell, not an afterthought. We’ve been selecting colors for Portland-area homes for over three decades, and we understand the specific challenges of this region: the grey winter light that makes warm colors essential, the summer sun that washes out south-facing walls, and the lush green landscape that every exterior palette needs to complement rather than compete with.

Color consultation is included at no extra charge with every painting estimate. You’re not just hiring a painting contractor — you’re getting the experience of a family that’s been doing this for 30 years.

Our approach

Color decisions informed by
architecture, light, and climate.

Exterior color is an architectural decision, not a decorating one. The color of your home interacts with its roof, landscaping, neighboring houses, and the quality of natural light at your specific latitude and orientation. A color that looks stunning on a south-facing Craftsman in Lake Oswego may look entirely different on a north-facing Colonial in Beaverton. We evaluate all of these factors on-site before recommending any palette.

The Benjamin Moore color system and Sherwin-Williams ColorSnap tools are excellent starting points for exploring ideas. But nothing replaces seeing a swatch on your actual wall, in your actual light, at different times of day. During every estimate visit, we bring physical fan decks and can apply test patches directly to your surface so you can evaluate colors in the environment where they’ll live permanently.

Interior color is driven by different variables: room size, ceiling height, natural vs. artificial light, floor tones, and how the space connects to adjacent rooms. A color that opens up a north-facing living room may overwhelm a small south-facing bedroom. We think about flow between rooms — how colors transition through doorways and sightlines — not just individual room decisions in isolation.

For commercial properties and multi-unit buildings, color selection has additional dimensions: brand consistency, tenant perception, HOA compliance, and the practical reality that commercial colors need to look clean and fresh longer than residential palettes. We’ve guided property managers through full-building color selections many times and understand the stakeholder dynamics involved.

We work with every major manufacturer — Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams, Miller Paint, and others — and select products based on which will perform best on your specific surfaces and exposures, not based on brand preference or promotional pricing. The paint and the color are two separate decisions, and we help you make both well.

Body, trim, accent, and front door colors coordinated with your roof, landscaping, and neighborhood context. Includes test patches on the actual structure.
02
Interior Room-by-Room Design
Colors selected for each room based on light, size, ceiling height, and how spaces connect. We plan transitions between rooms so the home feels cohesive.
03
Cabinet & Woodwork Color
Kitchen cabinets, built-ins, and trim need colors that complement the room without overpowering it. We help match cabinet finishes to countertops, flooring, and wall colors.
04

Color selection for offices, retail spaces, and commercial buildings — including brand color matching, tenant-appropriate palettes, and multi-building consistency.
05
HOA & Multi-Unit Palettes
Full-building color schemes that comply with HOA regulations while improving curb appeal. We’ve guided many HOA boards through the selection and approval process.
06
Product & Finish Selection
The right product is as important as the right color. We recommend specific sheens, formulations, and brands based on surface type, exposure, and durability requirements.
What clients say

"He walked with my wife and I through each room and talked about the color and the finish of the paint that would best complement the space. The attention to detail was incredible. Hire him — you won't regret it and you'll get compliments on your house."

Common questions

Architectural Color Design —
Common Questions

What to know about working with Oren Painting on color selection for your home or commercial property. For a personalized consultation, request a free estimate.

Is color consultation really included free with every estimate?
Yes. Color guidance is part of every painting estimate we provide. During the site visit, we bring physical color samples, discuss your preferences and the architectural factors specific to your home, and can apply test patches directly to your surfaces. There’s no separate fee for this service — it’s part of how we work.
How do I start choosing colors for my home’s exterior?
Start with what you can’t change: your roof color, stone or brickwork, and hardscape. These fixed elements define the palette boundaries. Then consider your neighborhood context and personal style. Browse manufacturer tools online for inspiration, but don’t commit to anything until you see it on your actual house — screen colors are never accurate. We’ll help narrow it down during your estimate visit.
Why does a paint color look different on my wall than it did in the store?
Because light changes everything. Store lighting is fluorescent — your home has natural light that varies by time of day, season, wall orientation, and what’s outside the window. A north-facing room in Portland gets cool, blue-toned light all day. A south-facing room gets warm, yellow light. The same color looks fundamentally different in each. This is exactly why we apply test patches on-site.
What paint brands do you work with?
We work with all major manufacturers: Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams, Miller Paint, and others. We don’t have brand loyalty — we recommend products based on which will perform best for your specific application. Different brands excel at different things: some have superior exterior formulations, others have wider color ranges, others have better cabinet-grade finishes.
How many colors should a home’s exterior have?
Most homes use three to four exterior colors: a body color (the largest surface area), a trim color, an accent or shutter color, and a front door color. Simpler homes may use two. Ornate Victorian or Craftsman homes may use four or five. The key is restraint — too many colors creates visual noise. We help find the right balance for your home’s specific architecture.
What’s the difference between paint sheen levels?
Flat/matte hides imperfections but is harder to clean — best for ceilings and low-traffic walls. Eggshell/satin offers a slight luster and good washability — ideal for most interior walls. Semi-gloss is durable and moisture-resistant — best for trim, doors, kitchens, and bathrooms. High-gloss is very reflective and extremely durable — used for front doors and accent trim. We recommend the right sheen for each surface.
Can you help with HOA color restrictions?
Yes. We’ve worked with many HOA boards on color compliance. If your HOA has an approved palette, we work within it. If they’re updating their color scheme, we can present options to the board with samples and mockups. We understand the approval process and can help navigate it efficiently.
How do I choose interior colors that flow between rooms?
The key is visual connection through doorways and sightlines. Adjacent rooms don’t need to be the same color, but they should share an undertone family (warm or cool) so transitions feel natural. We think about the view from one room into the next and plan color transitions accordingly — not just individual rooms in isolation.
What colors work best for Portland’s climate and light?
Portland’s overcast winters create cool, flat light for most of the year, which makes warm neutrals, greens, and earth tones particularly effective on both interiors and exteriors. Pure whites can feel stark and cold. Cool greys can feel depressing under grey skies. We steer clients toward colors that work in Portland’s real-world light — not just in magazine photos shot in Arizona sunshine.
Do you charge extra for using multiple colors?
No. Whether your home uses two colors or five, there’s no upcharge for multiple colors. The time involved in cutting in and switching between colors is factored into our standard estimate process. We want you to choose the right colors for your home — not settle for fewer colors because of pricing pressure.
